Does Jira OnDemand scale to number of issues and/or users?

Shawn Dodds September 6, 2012

We're near the end of the 10-user evaluation, and one of our teams wanted to test performance after importing 50,000-100,000 issues. The person tasked with doing the import looked at the System Configuration and seeing that the Java VM memory is only 506MB, doesn't want to even bother with trying the import.

Maybe the Java VM size is a limit on the evaluation. We plan to continue to pay for the 10 user package until we have determined that OnDemand is the right solution for us (or not).

In any case, as we load this up with issues or move to another user tier (500+), will the Java environment scale to support us?

Thanks!

Hi AvidUser,

It should scale to make sure that your instance remains performant. We have quite a few OnDemand instances with ~100,000 issues with no problems.

There are no limitations in place for the 10-user subscription or the evaluation - you get all the same features as the other user tiers.

Simon,

Thanks for the quick response. Of course, the person tasked with the import is not yet satisfied, and asked "How many instances does Jira OnDemand have with 200,000 issues, since we'll probably be there in a year". I didn't realize that my company had this many issues with their software. :-\

No problem :) it pays to be paranoid, generally. We're querying the data now and I'll let you know when we have some results.

Alright - we have about 10 instances with over 100,000 issues actively in use. 200,000 issues though, not so much. If you're expecting to get to 200,000 issues in the year, then 400,000 the next year, then OnDemand probably isn't the place you want to set up shop.

It all depends on how much you expect it to be used. You can "cleanup" old issues and keep the instance up and running with no problems, but once you get to around 500,000 issues you'll see performance issues.
