If we modify workflows, and create fields and rules, and perform other modifications, are they automatically present after Jira upgrades, or is in necessary to import them after upgrades?  An employee in another company told me he was instructed not to alter a workflow in order to prevent problems after upgrades.

For Jira Cloud there should be no issues with modifying anything using the tools given by Jira or from the Marketplace.

It would be highly unusual for problems to arise from basic changes like you have mentioned.

You've tagged this with "Cloud", where you have no control over upgrades, nor any need to do anything about them.

If you mean Server/DC, then as long as you are using a standard supported Atlassian upgrade on it, then no, it will handle all your config and data for you, and you don't need to think about it (unless the release notes say otherwise)
