Difference between DERIVED FROM and RELATED TO?

Stu Hubbard February 3, 2020

What is the difference between the fields DERIVED FROM and RELATED TO? I know they both link issues, are they just different because of the issues you use them with (Stories derived from Features or Epics and Dependencies or Risks related to Stories)? Thanks

It depends on how you want to interpret these. I'd describe these the following way:

- Related to: an issue that holds a direct relationship to another, due to an overlap of information, scope or outcomes. One would use this link to ensure visibility of all important information to resolve an issue

Derived from: an issue that has been created as an extension of or due to the existence of another issue. Spin-off might be another way to describe it
