Deactivate a user options

Donald Collins October 11, 2024

Hi Community,
Thank you for your time and help!

We need to deactivate a user and we see (2) options:

1) Suspend access
2) Remove user

What does each do specifically and what happens to the user's tickets and information for each choice?

Thanks!

Hi @Donald Collins

Everything about that can be found here:

https://support.atlassian.com/user-management/docs/remove-or-suspend-a-user/

What does each do specifically and what happens to the user's tickets and information for each choice?

Remove - Removes it from the Org. You need to invite them again.

Suspend - For temporary access restriction, opt for Suspend access instead of permanently removing the user.

No data is lost.

Thank you Aaron for your quick reply and help.
It looks like "Remove user" is the option for us as they won't appear in our organization or have access to our products anymore.  Additionally, removing will take away their roles and group memberships which is what we want.

Thanks!
Best Regards,
Donald

Hello, @Donald Collins

To answer the bit about "what will happen to the user's tickets" – they should remain linked to the user, and the name of the user should still be visible, e.g., on comments as the author.

If this was your org managed user, and you deleted it instead – this would turn all references into the "Former User", i.e., the Cloud takes "delete" request as an anonymisation request.
