Data migration during Upgrade

Somphop Sukhotanang October 19, 2016

Hello,

We are planning the JIRA upgrade from 6.2.7 to 6.4.14 and Agile from 6.3.13.1 to 6.7.16. Because we don`t have a test environment so I was made the decision to build a new server with new database. Regarding this I have 2 questions: - What if the prefered method to migrate the database (use the backup/restore system menu, SSIS on SQL side or any other option)? - Is there any option to migrate attachement or just a manual migration?

Thanks and regards

If you can duplicate the database (ideally at a point in time when no-one is actively using JIRA) on to the new database, that's usually the easiest, fastest and cleanest way to do it.  Obviously, you'll want to start with the same version of JIRA on the new server, then go through upgrading that and testing it all.  Backup/restore is more for small systems and changes of database.

You'll need to copy the attachments, no matter what you do, but you don't strictly need them for technical testing or upgrades.   A lot of people doing what you're doing will copy them initially, and then use something like rysnc to bring them up to date after testing.
