Custom field (on issue screen) - visibility in Sprint Reports

Amulya Sankara January 29, 2025

I would like to add a custom field to select the Product on the Create Issue screen.

I would like to have one single Company Managed Project and then use this custom field to distinguish between the products my teams will be working on. The Product field will be used to customize swimlanes in the Project board.

Note: I will also have individual team boards under this main project. So the team can create any issue and then assign the Product accordingly.

I would also like the Product field to be part of the Reports (Ex: Sprint Burn down charts, etc.) for some analysis. I want to know if it is possible for the custom field to be used in the Sprint Analysis Reports.

Do I have to customize anything here, or is it automatically used by Jira?

Hi @Amulya Sankara,

You will need to configure the Product custom field and add it to the create issue screen(s) of the issue type(s) you want to use it on.

Customising the swimlanes on your board might be a bit challenging, depending on the number of products you have. You will not be able to just select your custom field there as the basis for swimlanes dynamically, but rather define swimlanes based on queries and then create a separate query for each product you want to display in a separate swimlane. If you have 5 to 10 products, that is manageable - if you have dozens or more, that may become difficult to maintain.

Additionally, most built-in reports in Jira are not customisable. You cannot add your custom field to the sprint reports. You can obviously e.g. export the data from your reports (after you view them in the issue navigator) with the additional field an build your own reports there, or use additional reporting solutions to build more custom reports of your own.

Hope this helps!

Okay, this helps clarify things a bit. Thankyou!

Hi @Amulya Sankara ,

If you will understand that customizable columns in reports is a must-have feature for you, you can install my app - Multi-team Scrum Metrics & Retrospective. With it, you will have this view:

Hi @Amulya Sankara,

An alternative to swim-lanes would be the quick-filters. You could create quick filters for each product in the agile board. This way, each team can the board with their quick filter applied and this will show only the issues for the product they are working on.

Regarding the sprint reports, they cannot be customized to use quick-filters or to use a specific quick-filters...

If you don't have so many products, you could create an agile board for each product and use them for reporting purposes only (Product A Reporting, Product B Reporting, ...). These agile boards can be created based on a custom filter in which you'll include only the issues of a certain product.

In addition, you could also try to use gadgets from third party plugins available on Atlassian Marketplace.  In case you plan to try apps, our Great Gadgets app offers some gadgets that can be helpful for your use case.

For example, by using the Pivot Table & Pivot Chart gadget you can generate all kind of sprint stats split by Product and other fields, in form of tables or charts of various types.

Also, by using the Release Burndown Burnup Chart gadget offered by the same app you could create burndown charts per product, while using the Kanban Velocity gadget you could create velocity charts per product. This is possible because these gadgets do not use sprints as input, but filters/JQLs.

Hope this helps.

Danut.
