I have two custom fields based on the issue type, which appears on the create issue screen and gets updated too when I change the issue type.
However when i try to edit the issue the fields do not appear in the edit screen for that type.
The more amusing part is those fields appear when I go into edit again.....
you mean the fields which are issuetype specific are not getting loaded when issuetype is changed on edit screen? are you getting the customfield loaded after
i) changing the issuetype and update button pressed
ii) and if we edit the screen now, the fields appear right?
I faced the same problem but programmatically managed to set those fields.

but I donot find the solution from that. May be it is a bug or due to corruption of Jira.
