Cryptic Error when quietly installing Jira with the response.varfile

Pierre Major March 26, 2012

We are testing our backup restore procedures. We want to use response.varfile to restore the Jira Server

When we

atlassian-jira-4.4.3.exe -q -varfile response.varfile as administrator in a cmd shell on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

we get the following error.log:

The directory you have selected is not a valid existing JIRA installation directory

1 I don't know which directory it is referring to

2 What is a valid existing JIRA Installation directory? (the error message show tell a bit more)

3 The manual installation works fine and the response.varfile comes from the manual installation on the same server. (We de-installed Jira before reinstalling it)

The response.varfile is in the attachment

I don't see any attachment. Did you forget it?

But looking at your issue, the Jira installation directory can be any directory on your server. But the installer will check if it exists, and if so if it is empty.

Check the contents of the varfile to see what installation directory you are referring to. Check this directory if there are remainders of your previous installation.

An other option is that the varfile is trying to do an upgrade instead of a clean install.

Post the varfile so I can check this out.
