Consequences of caching data in the web session

What would be the consequence, if my plugin would store some data (with references to classes defined in my plugin) in the Web Session of users?

For example, when the plugin is disabled and then reenabled (for example on plugin upgrade), what would happen with the old references?

I use versions >= 5.2 (also 6.x) of JIRA.
