When responding to a ticket, there are several groups defined that I can pick from. However, almost all of my responses are to a specific group halfway down the list.
Is there any way to set an account-specific default selection for the comment group that will be able to view the response?

At this time that is not a configurable option, however, there is a feature request that you can find at JRASERVER-38532 titled Allow better configuration of User Picker custom field.
I would vote on this issue and add your use case to the notes. Once you've done that you'll be directly notified of any changes/updates to JRASERVER-38532.
