Can you use "Teams" in Jira Cloud (site level) in Classic projects?

Recently JIRA Cloud added Teams at the site level.  I can as a user go to People and make a Team and have other members in it.    I am not able to see how I utilize that in a JIRA Classic project.  By being able to for example assign issues to this "Team"  

Are "Teams" something that is for Jira Classic projects or is this maybe just something for next-gen stuff?

Adding team members via the autonomous team feature is a new function avaliable to next-gen board only and does not apply to the classic board feature set.

There is further discussion on this in the documentation discussing the differences between Classic and Next-Gen, noting that classic projects are set up to centralize the team management around the project manager where the Next-Gen projects are designed to give independent management by project members within the projects.
