Can you override the Created Date of a issue in JIRA?

Is it possible to change the auto generated Created Date? For example, if I am entering in old requests created at an earlier date, I need to change the created date from the current date to the earlier date. I had a couple ideas, including adding a custom field that is a date-picker and setting that to be the created date, but this does not seem possible.

No, not without manipulating the database - a bad thing generally.
