If we create a subtask using the subtask feature present in jira , if we change all the subtasks from open to resolve can then the parent subtask too change its state from open to resolve or even vice versa

Another alternative is Structure, which can transition parent issues without you having to modify the workflow itself. See walkthrough here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ucajq05t_2I&hd=1

Structure adds a lot more, like unlimited hierarchy, so probably it would be overkill to use it just to sync parent status.

Hi,

give the JIRA Misc Workflow Extensions Plugin a try. It's got a post-function Transition parent issue which should do exactly what you want.

The alternative would be to use Greenhopper, which pops up an option to close a parent issue if all subtasks are closed.

Dom
