  • Can jira be configured to have more levels? For example Epic then Feature/Story/Improvement/etc then Task under each of these. Subtask is no use as it can't be viewed in the planning board or reported on as far as I can see.

Short answer no.. You can have Epics, containing tasks, which can have subtasks, but that's as deep as the rabbithole goes. Needless to say you can set issue relation, saying task-1 "is blocked by" task-2 which in terms "is blocked by" task-3, but that's as close as you will get.
