Can a Field type be an attachement ?

I would like to add a custom field of type Attachment. I don't seem to have the option. Is there a reason to that ?

The idea is for customers to be able to drag and drop an attachement when CREATING their request, rather than when commenting their request.

Thank-you for your help.

Welcome to the Community!

"Attachments" are not fields, they're a separate collection of functions for handling files attached to issues.

Some of these functions do manifest like fields, but they're not a custom field type like select list or radio buttons, they're interfaces into the attachments system.

So, no, you can't add custom fields of the type "attachment".  If you could, you'd find them to be a complete waste of time, they'd do exactly what the "attachment" system field does, just duplicating the behaviour.

You absolutely can drag and drop (or click and upload) attachments on creating an issue though.  To do it, you need to look at a couple of things:

  • The user has the permission to add attachments
  • The system Attachment field on the create screen for the project and issue type
  • You may need the user to use "configure fields" when they are creating an issue - attachment may be hidden until they configure the fields they're interested in

Thank-you so much. I am just starting with Jira and you just made it all much more clear !

I hope the answer made sense!  It's quite heavy on the internals of Jira!
