Can a Component have more than one lead, or a custom field?

Can a Jira Component have more than one lead at a time, or a different kind of lead from the standard ones? I'd like to name a Component Lead and a Sustaining lead, who would be responsible for work once the Version has been released.

It is not possible out of the box in JIRA. You can write plugins to capture more data for components and use it as you like but involves some dev work.

Could you go into a bit of detail about what sort of plugin would allow us to do this?

You can create a new webwork+web-item to capture the details, store it in DB using Active Objects and then use a component tab panel to display the details.
