There are two ways to create a 3-layer task creation:

  1. Use Epics - Stories/Tasks - Sub-tasks
You can read more about epics here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AGILE/Working+with+Epics
The stories/tasks and sub-tasks are standard 2-layer functionality.
  2. Use Structure plugin
There is a plugin for JIRA which is very neat where you can create a multi-layered structure with endless hierarchies if you wish. https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.almworks.jira.structure

Good luck!

Hey Sana & Showkat, Just wanted to clarify 'Structure' plugin is not available for use in JIRA Cloud. But would be useful for teams with JIRA Server. The hierarchy of Epic -> Story or Task -> Sub-task is the best method to implement a 3 layer arrangement. Cheers, Paul

Jira cannot handle Story/Task/sub-task as a 3rd-level structure, because a Task is on the same level as a Story.

Links Hierarchy for Cloud can help a lot in many ways:

  1. If you are using Agile, it displays Agile Hierarchies (Epic-Tech Task-Subtask)
  2. If you are not using Agile, it displays any n-depth multi-level hierarchy of linked issues through regular links.

If you are using JIRA Agile and you want to add subtasks, be aware that they do not appear on the Agile planning board and estimated story points do not automatically total up in to the task or story.  Once the sprint begins, a subtask is visible (if assigned and added to the sprint) with the parent task number/summary displayed in a small box over the subtask.  There are issues opened around these topics if you'd like to search them out and vote for them.

Hi Showakt,

Yes, JIRA can. Just be aware that to use Story as an issue type you will need to subscribe to JIRA Agile. smile

Please refer to What is issue type to see what are the defaults of JIRA.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
