Can I restrict a JIRA user to a portion of a project?

For example, let's say I had a contractor that was only working on version 2 of a project - could I hide all issues not assigned to version 2 from the contractor? What about components? If I had a component called "widget" that the contractor was working on, could I limit their access to component = widget?

Hi Jim,
It is not possible directly to restrict visibility of sections of a project, however it is possible to restrict issues based on an issue level security. Please have a look at this documentation for details on issue level security. I do not think it will be possible to restrict access based on component, it would however be possible to set a security level through work flow post functions. Perhaps by making use of these post functions you can still reach a similar situation where you can restrict access to particular (type of) issues for a user or usergroup.
