Can I "simulate" a two week sprint, and generate the corresponding burndown?

Hello Jira cloud users and administrators.

I'd like to practice generating burndown charts for several two week sprints, and I don't want to wait two weeks to see the burndown charts. How can I do this?  Is there a Jira lab that user can use to run various scenarios?

I suppose I can create one-day sprints, and set the time estimates in hours, and generate the burndown charts, but I'd rather create simulations that are as close to reality (2-week sprints) as possible.

Jira version: Cloud

I can create company-managed and team-managed projects.

Many Thanks

SD

Burndown charts show data as soon as you activate the sprint, and you start logging time. As far as I know, you can't "fake" this to see how the burn downs will appear, though, so you have to wait and log time each day.

Is there something in particular you want to test? Perhaps we can help you, so you don't have to wait for the result?

Thank you, Jimi. There was no particular functionality that I wanted to test; I just wanted to get more familiar with the input (story points and time), process & output (the chart).

Thanks again

Burndown charts show data when you activate the sprint and start logging time.

Can you please explain to me step by step how to do it? Currently, in my project, we generate burndown on story points so if all the users get closed on the last date the graph looks very bad. Can we get a step-down graph from the 1st day of the sprint? I appreciate any help you can provide.

Sure, there are a few ways you can simulate 2-week sprints in Jira to generate burndown charts.

1. Create a custom field for sprint length

One way to do this is to create a custom field for sprint length. This will allow you to specify the length of each sprint in days, so you can create simulator Values that are as close to reality as possible.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Administration > Issues > Custom Fields.
  2. Click Create Custom Field.
  3. Select Single Select as the field type.
  4. In the Field Label field, enter a label for the field, such as Sprint Length.
  5. In the Default Value field, enter the number of days in a sprint, such as 14.
  6. Click Create.

Once you have created the custom field, you can use it to specify the length of each sprint when you create a new issue.

2. Use a third-party plugin

There are also a number of third-party plugins that can help you generate burndown charts for 2-week sprints. These plugins typically allow you to specify the length of each sprint, and they will then generate the burndown charts accordingly.

One popular plugin is the Jira Burndown Charts plugin. This plugin allows you to generate burndown charts for both 1-week and 2-week sprints.
