We need to upgrade JIRA 6.4.11. Can we go directly to the latest 7.2.7?

Sure, you can do it. Remember to backup your files prior to backup including your server.xml and any other files you modified in JIRA install directory.

While JIRA sometimes requires that you go through an intermediate version to reach the most recent ones, this generally only happens when you are moving multiple major versions at once (for example, you can't go directly from JIRA 4.0 to 7.x).  Barring those special cases, we strongly encourage upgrading to the very latest version directly, as it may correct any issues in the upgrade process that were discovered later.

The latest available version is always the one that is linked to on the download page for JIRA.

(As of this instant, that is 7.3.1)

So, it's better to go to the latest. Thanks!

Question:

In Backup JIRA data there is a message: "Attachments will not be backed up. This needs to be done manually."

Does it mean all issues will loose attachments?

It means that attachments are not included as part of the backup file, so you can only back them up manually (say by making a deep copy of the attachments directory).

You would not normally lose attachments as part of the upgrade.  The backup is to protect yourself if something unexpected happens.

What is a deep copy?

Copying the directory structure and all of the files that it contains.  It just means make sure you get the whole thing.

Thank you!

Last thing: Does it mean I need to go from issue to issue and manually copy all attachment links?

If you're changing your JIRA_HOME directory you can copy attachments, avatars, logos etc. to new one (or just copy your old JIRA_HOME directory to new location).

If you're not changing your JIRA_HOME you don't have to it.

JIRA XML (zipped) backup contains only database and attachments are stored separately in the filesystem.

Do all this in a test JIRA instance first, not with your production data

Latest is 7.3.1.

Upgrade method is the same as for 7.2.7 - directly.
