Can I defeat the 10 character project key limit in Jira 5?

Our project dynamically creates project keys based on combinations of developer name abbreviations. These often end up being in the 15 character range. Is there any way to defeat the 10 character limit? I tried updating the project key regex in settings, but the length limit still applies.

I am creating these projects using the JCLI, but it applies to creating them manually as well.

We are getting hit with this as well - I have not seen anywhere that I can override the 10 character limit. If I do I will update here. 4.4 does not have this restriction - 5.0 does.

Please note that from JIRA 6.x, the character limit can be configured.
