I have set up a custom email notification to send emails upon a specific state transition. I want this notification to go to a distribution list. It seems emails are received when I pass individual email address, but emails are not received when I pass a distribution list.
The field I use to pass the distribution list is called "To addresses".
Also can a DL have its own sub DLs. Will that cause any issues?
Any help would be appreciated.
There isn't a difference between a DL and individual email from JIRAs perspective. This is all handled by the receiving mail server.
If the email is not getting received I suggest you check the following:

in case you see any related errors please post them here

Thanks for your response Peter. Another piece of info is that our JIRA is integrated with outlook distribution lists (groups). But before a DL can be referenced within JIRA it needs to be added to JIRA first. I wonder if that is the case since I cannot see the DL from our Jira. I have asked our IT department to add it.

I think that is the case!

The "to addresses" field should be able to send email messages to any email it is configured to send it to, including distro list. Can you check the logs if there are any errors? Nested DLs is no exception here.

Double check you are using the SMTP address of the DL. I don't see why this wouldn't work. Maybe ask your exchange admins if it's being blocked, or if the user doesn't have permission to send to that DL.
