Best practices for Atlassian Jira Backups

Hello,

I would like to know the best practices for backing up our Jira Installation. Is there a built in solution that we can use to store backup files to Amazon S3 and restore from later?

Hi there,

we are using two scripts on our server. One builds the backup from the database backup and a .tar-file of the jira home directory, one copies this backup onto our backupserver.

Every now and then we use one of those backups to freshen up our testsystem, so that's where we have frequent recovery tests.

Quite simple solution which works just fine for us.

Harry is entirely correct that backing up the database and home directory is the most relaible backup solution, (which is aso the quickest and easiest to restore in the event of failure), so I'd recommend you checkout this document which discusses the options and points out the files that are most important to backup: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Backing+Up+Data

It is best to take a database backup as well as the JIRA home directory instead of using XML backup. Keep an instance locally for fast restore as well as off site to a separate location. That's all really.
