Auto-complete user picker: Sharing vs. Mentioning

I experienced that there obviously is a difference between picking a user from mentioning auto-complete dialog and the dialog for picking users via sharing.

In case of sharing I get some suggestions. Wiht the same string typed in for mentioning nothing happened no suggestions pop-up.

Does anyone else observe the same behavior? What could be the reason?

Even for @mentions the auto complete should work.
