Assignee Field Not Available When Creating Issue

When creating a new task in Jira, the Assignee field does not appear by default.  When attempting to add the field (Configure Fields > Where is My Field, typing Assignee), I receive the following error:

 

"The JIRA server was contacted but has returned an error response. We are unsure of the result of this operation."

Hi Chris,

There "Where is my field" error is a bug being tracked at:

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-40658

Please make sure the Assignee field is present in the screen associated to the Create Issue operation in your project, and it is not hidden in the field configuration as well. Please see Configuring Fields and Screens for more details about this.

This is probably since the field is not part of the Create screen for that relevant Issue Type.

Follow this page to make sure Assignee is part of the create screen.
