The gadget is a very simple hard-coded variant on the more flexible "issues" gadget. It shows all unresolved issues assigned to the current user.
So, no, you can't change it because it's supposed to be reporting on what I just said, and it does.
Of course, it's easy to do what you want - define a filter for what you want to see and use that in an issue list gadget instead. (I'd suggest the filter be "status in (open, in progress) and assignee = currentUser()" , although that does mean you'll be missing open issues assigned to you in other status)
