Are Epics necessary to use Portfolio?

Just that.  Epics are not required for Agile development, but they seem to be in order to use Portfolio.  Is this true?

Hey Scott, they aren't mandatory in the new Portfolio live plans (currently available in labs for both Cloud and Server) - there you can just work with a flat list of issues and not model any hierarchy.

Thanks.  How do I get the labs version of Portfolio?

Would also like to know how to get new Portfolio. Am currently considering Portfolio vs. Aha.
