Application Link Set Up On Virtual Machines

Harold_Waldron August 12, 2014

I've set up Jira and Confluence on separate virtual machines and have set them up using SSL (port 443). I'm now attempting to get the two apps talking to each other using the Application Link pages provided with each apps. Neither of them can see the other and I'm at a loss. Both apps say they can't find the other and to try and "relocate" them. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Are the VM's using an internal IP Address or something that the other can't see maybe?

1. If you are using amazon cloud - it is possible that two machines inside same network will not see each other using the external names. Please try to connect using the internal ip addresses (and maybe http protocol on proper port)

2. There might be the problem with self-signed certificates - you should properly import them at each system before the creation of app link if you are using https scheme of connection between application (see https://answers.atlassian.com/questions/2676/application-links-over-https-not-working-cert-problem)

I'm using a corporate VMWare type set up with the VM's and my certs are through a 3rd party ceritificate authority. That's kind of why I'm at a loss now. I'm assuming something is going on within the VM's and DNS where Jira and Confluence doesn't trust the IP Address that's attempting to talk to the other (something is not happy between external and internal IP's).

That or SSL is the issue. I'm still not 100% sure anyone has set up the Application Link while using SSL. Hopefully someone has and they'll point me in the right direction.

Hi Harold,

Application Links using SSL should work fine, however they are prone to a few more issues.

When you try to add a link from JIRA to Confluence in the Application Links admin screen after you enter the URL of Confluence and click the 'Create new link' button you should see a dialog like this:

http://cl.ly/X297

Applinks creation dialog

If you don't then it suggests that the JIRA server does not have a valid route to Confluence.
