Add custom field to issue summary page?

I found this information but the file locations are different and I am not sure if this information posted in 2008 is valid for JIRA 5.1.7. I can't seem to find any recent information on how to do this. Can someone tell me if this is still valid even though the files are located in different locations and one of them is named differently??

It is not valid anymore as the issue summary is now rendered in view-issue-plugin which is a bundled plugin.

I have a small write-up on modifying bundled plugins if you are adventurous enough to try it!
