Add a variable number of customfields to an isse

I have the following situation:

Custom field of type cascading select, where one list is a component and the other a versions that applies to the component.

I would like to select multiple component/version in an issue, but this is variable. Is this possible to address this with customfield approach or the component should be an issue by itself and use links to the issue?

my suggestion is use Component's and version system fields, this way you track changes easily.
