Add Time estimate to Kanban Project Issue

We are using the JIRA Kanban project template to manage all out IT projects, and then use an epic for each "project".

Is there a way that I can use the estimated time field for the issues. This is just to give us of an idea of how long projects may take when we go to schedule them, and then to compare real time to see how well our estimate was so we can get better at estimating. 

It seems like this field was not meant for kanban, but can I somehow still use it.

We are using JIRA cloud.
