6.1.7: mailfetcherservice spamming logs

After an upgrade from 6.0.6 to 6.1.7, I'm seeing the following message appearing in the log (catalina.out) several times per minute:

...
2014-02-12 02:17:04,609 QuartzScheduler_Worker-3 ERROR ServiceRunner Comments [atlassian.mail.incoming.mailfetcherservice] Comments[10100]: Could not find a corresponding issue to comment and 'Create a new issue from each email' is not selected.

What does it mean and how do I get rid of it?

Apparently, this stems from Jira's inability to process certain e-mails in its incoming queue. Must be a regression -- the earlier version(s) did not complain about a "bad" message more than once.

I had to add Jira's account to my e-mail program and clean-up Jira's mailbox to make the problem go away (for a while?).
