Performance JIRA Cloud for European located countries >1000 Users

Alexander Fedtke August 25, 2019

Hi,

what is your experience regarding the performance of the atlassian jira cloud service for a european located (germany) company with more than 1000 users?

Is it slower than jira software currently self hosted in our basement?

Who is running jira cloud with more than 100 users in europe?

Best
Alex

@Alexander Fedtke

There are two factors here,

  1. If you have fairly spec machine running Jira on your premise (not overloaded and you have provided enough memory/cpu to jira and DB)
    1. Accessing Jira on your premise will always be faster (as it can done on local area network)
    2. Accessing Jira outside your premise will depend on internet upload bandwidth you have in your premise.
  2. For cloud Jira
    1. It uses CDN around the world for faster access, so outside your premise performance might be good.

Which features are affected by this CDN only stored images?

Let us dive more into Atlassian cloud architecture to know about this,

  • Atlassian uses AWS (Amazon web services) for its cloud infrastructure.
  • When you get a cloud version jira, your data (database etc) will be hosted  based on your location,
    • in case of Europe it will be at Dublin and Frankfurt.
  • Atlassian also maintain an encrypted copy of your data throughout multiple geographies (to prevent any disaster)
  • When you access Cloud Jira, static resources (like css, js, common images and common html templates) will be delivered by Atlassian's content delivery network nearest to your location of access.

So page load will be faster due to CDN. For example,

  • if you are accessing Jira from Germany, your static resources will be delivered from location near to Germany.
  • if you are accessing your Jira from US, your static resources will be delivered from location near US.

Also, CDN for static resources is  also available for Data Center version of Jira (version 8 onward).
