Missing "assignee" drop down in an existing project

I added a new task to an existing project and am unable to assign it to a developer because the "assignee" drop down option is no longer available. I do not have administrator permissions to add it back. How can I retrieve it for a new task in an existing project?

Check you have the permission for "assign issue" (not the same as "assignable user") first.  If you have it, then you'll need an admin to add the field back to the sceen, or un-hide it.
