Migrate self-managed Jira server to Atlassian cloud

vmandapati July 4, 2022

I am a Solution architect and I have deployed a custom On-prem Continuous Deployment solution with self-managed Jira server and self-managed Bamboo server wired between them with application links, both deployed on-prem in local data center deploying to on-prem target servers. But now, due to license upgrade restrictions and approaching EOL of server licenses, we are planning to migrate both self-managed Jira and self-managed Bamboo to Atlassian cloud however we still want to deploy to local on-prem.

Need confirmation on below two things :

1. Ability to deploy to on-prem with Bamboo deployed in Atlassian Cloud.

2. Ability to migrate self-managed Bamboo server also onto Atlassian Cloud, along with Jira server. Do not want Jira on cloud and Bamboo on Data center. Do not prefer mix-and-match of data center and cloud.

Please advise.

Hi @vmandapati ,

Bamboo is not available on Cloud, but Bitbucket Cloud provides Pipeline functionality, which might replace Bamboo.

https://bitbucket.org/product/de/features/pipelines

And you can deploy to other servers using SCP

https://support.atlassian.com/bitbucket-cloud/docs/deploy-using-scp/

Maybe that works for you.

Thank you Bastian. Bamboo is available in Data center and we prefer to continue to use Bamboo on Data center. Hope that is not going to be challenge to continue to use Bamboo on Data center. Already we are being pushed out of self-managed Bamboo and cannot imagine getting pushed out of Bamboo tool itself and migrate to BitBucket unless there is a plan to deprecate Bamboo on Data center in the future by Atlassian. Also, In the current solution we have two separate Bamboo instances where we export the Configuration Plan as code as Bamboo Specs (Java specs) and import them (cloning) into other Bamboo instance. Plans are managed as code and stored in BitBucket (being used as source code repository tool). Please advise.

Basically when we migrate from self-managed server instances, we want to keep both Jira and Bamboo in Data center or cloud, not a mix and match. MEaning we want to migrate both Jira and Bamboo self-managed servers to Data center versions, due to non-availability of Bamboo Cloud. Otherwise our preference was to migrate both to Cloud

warm regards,

Rajeev

Hi Rajeev,

Thanks for the clarification.

You are right, Bamboo is available as Datacenter.

But the Data Center Versions of the Tools are still hosted by yourself, wherever you want.

So easiest would be to just change the license, remove the server licenses and then add the DC license and you are done.

You could move to a new infrastructure, if you want to use features like HA, but you don't have to.
