How can we migrate Jira server edition to cloud edition

As you all already know that atlassian is not planning on supporting Jira Server/Data center edition few years down the line.

Lot of people have decided to migrate jira data center instance to cloud.

As either their current version is too old (eg: Jira6 ir jira7) or they need licenses based on need not as a package or feature missing.

Issues in migration

1. Unable to copy project configuration and workflows at once

2. Ticket dump when uploaded shows ticket status as new and all the ticket history is gone along with comments

3. Attachment to the tickets are not getting migrated

With this insight lets start a discussion as many people will soon get this issue.

What is the possible solution to this issue?

No, that's not right.

  • Atlassian have said that Server ends in 2024.  Cloud and Data Centre will continue and have no plans to end.
  • A lot of people have decided to migrate Jira Server to Cloud or Data Center.  Some people may have thought of moving DC to Cloud because of the announcement, but I've yet to find one.

So, on the issues,

If you're on Jira 7 or above, a migration to DC is not a problem, and if you're on 6, it's not hard to upgrade that to 7+ and then migrate to DC.

If people are on Server versions not able to be migrated to Cloud (easily), then they can still renew their licence to allow them to get up to a Cloud compatible version and then move, and drop that licence in favour of their new Cloud one.

On the issues in migration, it all depends on what you're trying to migrate.  We're doing a lot of migrations to Cloud and there's no problem migrating standard off-the-shelf project config, workflows, status, history, comments or attachments (unless there's something really odd about them) beyond looking at conflicts and larger uploads failing.  So I think we have to ask for more descriptions of what is going wrong for you?
