New project permission grant experience on Permission schemes page

Hi Jira Community!

We have been working on improving the project admin’s experience to grant permissions to users, groups, and roles on the permission schemes page for Company managed projects. We’re excited to share the updates about changes that will be coming soon (some of you might have already started seeing this change) to Jira Cloud, which will make the experience easier, faster, and secure.

More details on the changes are as follows:

1. Select multiple grants for a single permission

 multiple-grants-single-permission.png

We have introduced the ability to give multiple grants for single permission, which is different from the earlier format where a single grant was given for multiple permissions. This change makes it easier to navigate through multiple combinations of permission & grants, with no change in the flexibility to grant them. This will also lead to grant permission experience becoming more secure in the future.

2. Continue granting permissions via the “Grant another permission” checkbox

Since we can now add multiple grants per permission, we have introduced the “Grant another permission” checkbox below to make granting multiple permissions simpler.

3. Categorization of Permissions

We learned from you that finding particular permission in the drop-down was not very intuitive. Hence, we have introduced categorization among the permissions to organize them. This will make it easier to identify permissions that are related to each other eg: Comment permissions.

4. “Public” and “Any logged in user” are now on Grant permission window

Public and any-loggedin user.png

We have introduced “Public” and “Any logged in user” grant types in the “Grant Permission” window. “Any logged in user” was earlier residing within “Application access”, and “Public” was residing under the “Group” grant type. We’ve moved these grant types to the main window for easier access since they were one of the more commonly used items.

5. Better view of permission grants on the permission scheme page

We have introduced the “Show more” button to declutter the permission scheme interface, as more grants are added to permission.

We haven’t changed any settings and behaviors, so there is no need to re-learn how to configure your permissions on these screens – they are just easier, faster, and secure.

Once you’ve had a chance to try these changes out, let us know your thoughts by commenting on this post. We look forward to your feedback and to continuing to engage with you all as we further refine and improve permissions in Jira.

Thank you!

Good news, thanks for the update!

A huge step back unfortunately. Multi select in permissions was really a good thing :(

Why not keeping both? Multi permission selection and multi "grants to"?

And now this "show more" -- just why?? Simple ctrl-F won't work anymore if you want to doubleckeck particular group/role in whole Permission scheme.

UX/UI is getting more and more frustrating in Atlassian tools....

I would really love to see some data regarding the arguments behind considering this a good news, even more on the "... which will make the experience easier, faster ..."

With the old way to give one grant for multiple permissions it was 1000% faster to update several permission schemes to introduce improvements at the company level.

I don't see (but would like to understand) why this is better now than before, and also why it is not possible to do both: multiple grants for multiple permissions, so in that way it is really true that is faster so you don't need to go through several screens several times.

In my use case where we're managing permissions via externally dynamically managed groups, this change definitely doesn't make anything faster, as multiselect for permissions allowed for them to be set in one go per group and this change doesn't allow assigning a single permission to multiple groups in a similar manner, though as all permissions aren't set at one time anyway that would still be slower over time. Going to miss the former way, though I do get that the chances of misconfiguring permissions in the multiselect for permission format was higher, just required a double check which is still faster in the end and seemingly just as secure.

Surely there's something to learn from this change.

Would really love to have granting multiple permissions at once restored! I just encountered this update, and it has painfully slowed down the process of adding a new role to a permission scheme.

Can we please have the multiple permissions restored as it was?
It used to take me five minutes to set up a permission schemes, it's a lot slower now and feels so clunky.

For those who have commented and who are waiting for the old way to grant permissions, I have some updates: it will be back, and improved.

Just wait a bit ;-)

Hey Community,

Thanks for your responses.

We heard you, and we are bringing in the requested feature of "Multiple grants for multiple permissions" :D. More details in the latest post.

Please let us know your thoughts on it.

Thanks for the heads up @Alfonso Leiva
