how to interpret Default values of custom field from DB

Hi All,

Got to know that the default values of custom fields are stored in genericconfiguration table in XML format with tags having some IDs. the actual values seem to be stored elsewhere. It would be great if someone could throw some light on this and let me know where should i be looking for the actual value.
