a weekly schedule board in jira

Viktoria Lukinova December 12, 2020

Hi guys! We use Jira for the agile team, every person has their tasks with deadlines on them.

Is there a way to create a board/dashboard in Jira, where a person would see their tasks in a weekly schedule, like - which tasks do they have for Monday Thuesday, etc? I imagine a board with 5 columns and tasks divided into those columns, according to deadlines. Is this possible?

What would be another, fair easy way to organize tasks for a weekly schedule?

Hi @Viktoria Lukinova  -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

For an agile team I am puzzled why there would assigned tasks with "deadlines".  I could understand "want dates"... regardless of that...

You could put together the suggestions from @John Funk  and @Walter Buggenhout to either build a dashboard or add quick filters to your team's board, with filters for each day of the current week.  For example, if you did this with quick filters, they would be:

  • Monday: duedate = endOfWeek("-5d")
  • Tuesday: duedate = endOfWeek("-4d")
  • Wednesday: duedate = endOfWeek("-3d")
  • Thursday: duedate = endOfWeek("-2d")
  • Friday: duedate = endOfWeek("-1d")
  • Overdue: duedate < now()

Please see this documentation for more information about advanced filters:

Best regards,

Bill

We plan certain customer project tickets weekly based on time estimates.

I added swim lanes per day based on your quick filter suggestion and it works like a charm. I moved the overdue to the top to prioritize overdue tickets.

Thanks for the tip 👍

@Viktoria Lukinova Did you find an answer to this?  I'm looking to do the same with weekday tasks.

Hi @Viktoria Lukinova

not an answer to your question if it is possible with boards (in terms of agile) but I wanted to add that we realized it for some of our teams some years back using a calendar App for Jira.

Now it depends on if you are fine with a context switching between a board and a calendar - for some users this was inacceptable.
If this is a suitable option at least you have the calendar view - as users know it from a calendar. Pretty much the same like a paper based one.

https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1210975/calendar-for-jira-plan-team-activities?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

We used the App above but for Calendars there are surely options available in Marketplace.
Also the alternative approaches already mentioned sound very reasonable - the further progress might depend on the personal preferences of your users now, I think.

Cheers,
Daniel

Hi @Viktoria Lukinova,

Jira is not very well suited to support this approach out of the box. Board columns are mapped to statuses and unless you create a workflow with statuses like To do / Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday / Friday / Done you wouldn't be able to use a board for this purpose.

If you want to use due date as the key to map your issues to the correct day of the week, Jira is not your best friend either. There is no straightforward way to extract the weekday from a date using JQL. So you would need to add some additional automation or other tricks to extract that information.

Jira does have the Jira issues calendar gadget that you could add to a dashboard. With a filter like this and due date as the date to display, you come close, but you'll see the gadget is very minimalistic in use.

assignee = CurrentUser() and resolution = Unresolved

If full blown calendar functionality is really important for your organisation and you want extended features, you may want to have a look at what the Atlassian Marketplace has to offer.

Hi @Viktoria Lukinova  - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I don't think you can do it by column, but you could probably do it by Swimlane.
