Why are epic tasks excluded from Team-Managed Software Project?

Mladen Savic March 21, 2024

For reasons i have yet to understand, creating an Epic task for a software team-manager project is a problem. I can create the task by clicking the blue Create button at the top of the page. I can also create regular task in the backlog, and directly through the Board itself -but no epics. Either way - the Epic tasks do not show up on the board. I have checked the Project Settings, the filters and permissions and found no issues there. Any previous answers i have come across seem either irrelevant or outdated. The documentation is probably out of date too as no section addresses this particular issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as i am struggling to understand the logic behind such out-of-the-box project setup..

Hi @Mladen Savic

This isn't possible in Team-managed Projects.

You can however...

  • Add the Backlog (there by default in Scrum)
  • Activate the Epic Panel on the left-hand side (it's an option in the Epic filter drop-down)
  • Create an Epic from within this panel.

The alternative is to switch to a Company-managed Project, where you can choose to have Epics on the board, like any other issue card.

Hi @Mladen Savic

You might try creating a second board and see if that works. Here is an article to help guide you.

Hi @Mladen Savic , by design Epics are not intended to be displayed on the board. Typically they are containers for large bodies of work. This is why it is not an option to create an epic within the board. While you can display swimlanes by epic in CMP you cannot display the Epic as a card their either.

i stand corrected!

Stephen correctly points out that you can have an epic on CMP board. I have never tried this before TBH. Not sure I would ever do so in practice but guess it depends on how you use Epics.

Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to shed light on the subject. I'll need to explore it further, but this clarifies many questions.
