What happens to unfinished issues at end of Scrum sprint?

David A February 15, 2016

I'm just getting started with JIRA Software.

Suppose I start a new Sprint (using Scrum) and assign some issues to it. Suppose we get to the end of the sprint and an issue is unfinished. What happens to that issue then?

Furthermore, we want to keep an eye on how long issues take. We have measured them in Sprints. So if an issue is unfinished at the end of a sprint it may end up taking 2 sprints. What is the proper way of measuring issue duration?

Hi David,

if you close a sprint with open issues, they are sent back to the top of your backlog. You will get an information about that when closing the sprint.

Hi David,

It's true that they're moved back to the top of your backlog, but more specifically, JIRA will consider the next sprint as the top of your backlog (if you've created the next sprint prior to completing the current sprint) and it will put them in there.
