What are the Specific **integration** capabilities of HipChat with Jira?

We currently have both MS Communicator and Skype, so am looking for rationales as to what **more** HipChat would give us because of its integration with Jira.   Apart from the more obvious possibility that probably "less keystrokes are needed" if using HipChat with Jira instead of Skype or Communicator, anybody know what other specific benefits that the **Integration** of HipChat with Jira provides that Skype and Communicator could not?

I would suggesting using HipChat and you'll find out rather quickly... smile

There are 3 huge benefits:

  1. Mentioning a JIRA issue in the HipChat room will cause JIRA to inject the JIRA issue into the HipChat room.
  2. Whenever a JIRA issue is resolved, it can post it into HipChat.
  3. You can create HipChat rooms dynamically to talk about an issue from JIRA and people can "just" join.

In addition to that - the mobile integration, the always there transcripts etc are awesome!

Notifying people in a room when something has happened with an issue is the most common usecase, e.g:

  • issue created
  • issue transitioned to a new state
  • assignee field change
  • comment added

You can also set for what kind of issues you want updates posted in the room by using a simple Type and Priority filter or a full power of JQL.


Other useful functionality are

  • Issue Preview: "if you enter an issue key as part of a message, or paste a URL for the issue in any room in HipChat, you can receive a preview of the issue." and
  • Issue Mentions: "inside JIRA you can see which rooms the issue has been discussed"
  • Creating Dedicated Rooms: "You can focus your discussion by creating or selecting a HipChat room to discuss a JIRA issue"
