Use of Business Project Board

Erica Peck April 28, 2017

Currently, our tech team uses JIRA to track issues and run sprints.  However, from the business side, we would like to be able to add issues to a separate board.  The main goal would be that the tech team could see new issues we add while keeping us from editing/interfering with their boards.

Under Projects, I see there is a 'Business' option.  Would this fit what we need? Also, if we do use this option, will we be able to link issues from that board to issues on other boards?

Thanks!

Hi Erica,

The 'Business' option under Projects is a type of project. Just like a Software Project, it is a container for issues. It automatically comes with a board specifically for it. This board, however, offers different (and a bit less) functionality than a scrum or a kanban board for Software use.

It contains only issues from this project. The columns automatically map to the different stages of your project's workflow, you can't plan sprints and filter options are preconfigured and limited.

If that's what you need, then you're good to go. Your issues will not interfere with the boards from the tech team, but they wouldn't either if you created a separate Software project for them. Looking at it pragmatically, as long as you have a separate project for your issues or exclude them somehow from the tech team's board filter, you would achieve the same thing. Linking issues is also a general feature that does not relate to boards. It's something between issues, no matter if they are in a software, business (or even Service Desk) project.

What type of project (and board) you choose, is mainly depending on what advanced features you want to use in your boards (use the backlog, use swimlanes, add your own quick filters, configure cards, set up your board across multiple projects, ...)

Thank you for the quick response! Do you know if it is possible to link issues across Atlassian accounts? I assuming this isn't possible but wanted to confirm as our team has discussed getting a separate Jira account.

Hello Erica,

You can add multiple boards to a project(or a list of issues across projects). So, let the tech team work on their boards. Business team will have their own boards. Make sure the filter to list issues will overlap with the tech team board, so that when you create an issue in business board, same will pop up in tech team's board

We use same strategy in our company where business agile boards concentrate on Business Points, and project tech leads concentrate on Story points.

Regards,

Sanjay

Thank you for the reply! I think this is a great strategy for us to use.  Do you know if it is possible to link issues across Atlassian accounts?  I assuming this isn't possible but wanted to confirm.

Hi Erica - Can you clarify what you mean by "link issues across Atlassian accounts"?

Do you mean link two JIRA sites together so that you can create issue links from issues in one JIRA site to issues in another JIRA site? This can be done using application links.

Yes, it would be two separate Jira sites.  Glad to know it is possible.

Thanks!
