During the update we are running into problems with the new database.
Is there any way we can access this VM rather than through SSH connection?
We need the password for the root username.

Any chance you can elaborate a bit?
You raised this in the Jira Cloud section which I'm guessing is wrong as you are mentioning an upgrade and access to a VM.
A password for a (local) VM you'll have to get from your IT department.
As it is a linux machine (ssh/root) you might not have a GUI installed but you might be able to get to the machine using a console window from your VM provider (vmware?)
In general it might be best to contact your local IT support.
