Stories visible only when epic in certain status

I have epics with a workflow (ex. planning > In Progress > Done) and then user stories with a workflow (ex. planning > dev> done).

On my board I only want to show the stories in planning once the epics is "In Progress"

So i have in my swimlane query
issuetype = Story AND "Epic Status" = "In Progress"

this does not work though all my stories show even though epic is still in planning.

If I add a Quick filter with query:

issuetype = Story AND "Epic Status" = "In Progress"

it works. WHY???? Please help
