Selection of sprints contains all sprints, not only the ones for the project.

Frank Bernhardt December 11, 2019

We have noticed something new in Jira recently. When we assign a sprint, the pick list contains many values with sprints which, belong to other projects. In the past only Sprints created for one project were listed in that pick list.
This means that we have to scroll through long list or type name of the Sprint instead of seeing a short list with 2-3 values, like we did in the past.

Hello Frank,

Thank you for reaching out.

Actually, the sprint field is not related exclusively to board or projects, so it can be added to multiple issues in different projects if you want and that's why the sprint field displays Sprints related to issues from different projects when you click to select it.

I can confirm this is the default behavior since the Jira server 7.0 and always present in Jira Cloud, so I believe you must be using an old version of Jira Server or there were no other sprints from different projects if you saw a different behavior in the past.

That being said, we understand how this behavior can cause some inconvenience or mistakes when selecting a Sprint, so we created the following feature request to allow admins to add some restrictions to the Sprint field:

Ability to restrict the sprints shown in the 'Sprint Field'

Feel free to vote and watch the suggestion to increase its priority and also receive notifications about any updates.

For now, since sprint names are not unique in Jira, I recommend you to use unique Sprint names with a prefix of the project so that it will be easier to distinguish them when selecting.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Hello @Frank Bernhardt ,

The behavior you are describing of having sprints from other projects displayed across different scrum boards occurs after moving an issue into the sprint that is attached to an existing sprint.

Check out the following KB article that goes into more detail on the behavior and notes solutions for clean up:

Earl
