No longer able to drag and drop a story into an epic, why?

j_reed January 9, 2023

So before the new year I was able to move Story tickets into Epics by dragging and dropping them into box in the Backlog. Now when I attempt this I get an error "Epic can't be a parent issue of Story. To change this, adjust your issue type hierarchy settings." When I check my "issue type hierarchy" it is set up to allow Story tickets to be children of Epic. What happened, what changed, how can I move my existing tickets into the epic?

Hi @j_reed

This feature still works (I just tried it)

Based on the the error, I'd check your Issue Hierarchy settings first:

  1. Go to Settings > Issues
  2. Select Issue Type Hierarchy from the left-hand menu
  3. Check that the "Story" Issue Type has not been added to either the Epic's level, or any custom level above Epic, which would stop it being an Epic's child

Usually for Issue Types that are children of the Epic, they'll be at the level marked "All other standard issue types" and not mentioned specifically on this page

Something else you can try also is check that the Story does not already have the Parent Link set to an Epic - you can use either Parent Link or Epic Link to link an Epic's children to it - but can only set one or the other at any one time.

Hi @Stephen Wright _Elabor8_ Thanks for the information. With your explanation I was able to correct the problem. The dialog for making these settings is a bit confusing. As this worked before I went on vacation, and after I came back from vacation it didn't work for me I'm not sure what happened. In any case once I removed the Issue types from Epic except Epic then I was able to get it to work as I expected.

The problem turned out to be that you have to check the checkbox prior to dragging and dropping.  The advantage of this is that you can easily multi-select and drag them to an epic.

Is there something about the dropzone in the Epic sidebar over the Epic?  I've gotten it to work, but apparently only if the story is open and if I drop it in a certain area over the Epic?   Not sure, since I can't reproduce it...

I saw that too and came to the same conclusion. After some exploration, it turns out that the Jiras you're dragging need to have the checkbox selected.
