Jira put request for assigning a user to an issue not working

For some reason I am unable to change the assigned user of a task through the rest API. I am currently building a python bot which should adjust the assignees but I am unable to do so.

Currently I am posting to this url with the proper headers and auth

I am sending this json:
{"fields": {"assignee": {"accountId":"****************"}}}
Does anyone know how to properly do this? all info I am finding on this problem is outdated.

@Will Denton What message from Jira do you get when you run your script?

@Sebastian Krzewiński Currently a 405 response error "method not allowed"

@Will Denton could you share whole request that you did?
