After I installed jira on my local server I am not able to login to the jira. I though I had just written down my password incorrectly so I went through the password reset process. I can login to myatlassian with the reset password but not in to jira on my local server.

Welcome to our community, nice to have you here!
Bear in mind that the local Jira installation account is different than the my.atlassian account so that you probably have created a local admin which should have a different password.
If you have installed Jira connected to a dedicated database, you can follow the directions of the article below to retrieve the local admin account or reset the password directly in the database:
