Smart Commit transitions appear to require a Workflow with transition names. But the Simplified Workflow does not have named transitions. Regardless, the intent of something like JRA-123 #close is pretty obvious for the Simplified Workflow

It looks like in the Simplified Workflow transitions are named as states they transition to. Start editing your workflow, then click the transition arrow and you will see its properties and the name.
In my case I have a final state DONE so smart commit command `#done` transitioned my issue to this state.
But be cautious when a transition name has a space in it. Read the docs.
Would it be possible to continue using the simplified workflow but customize to name your transitions? I agree that it does not appear to be possible to use smart commits with a simplified workflow.
